From Bolzano to Calalzo di Cadore, this Collection takes you into the heart of the Northern Dolomites, part of the UNESCO World Heritage region. Get ready to pedal along verdant and tranquil cycle paths reserved for the exclusive use of walkers and cyclists. The views of the nature parks and peaks of the Dolomites will accompany you – and no doubt blow you away – along a spectacular and well-served route.
The journey starts at Bolzano’s station and ends at Calalzo di Cadore’s station. Both are amply served by fast regional trains. All the stages begin and end in places with a wide choice of restaurants and hotels, as well as being close to a railway station, allowing you to organise your route as you wish.
This Collection puts together part of the EuroVelo 7 and the MV cycle route, from Munich to Venice. Mainly following former railway lines, the route connecting the two cities is characterised by gentle gradients on a mostly asphalted surface. I recommend, however, that you take a bicycle with wheels also suitable for dirt roads, because the cycle path from Dobbiaco to Cortina d'Ampezzo is on gravel, as is the loop over the Boite river in stage 4.
The Collection includes two of the Northern Dolomites’ most iconic passes. The first is also the most challenging: the Passo Pinei, which you will tackle in stage 1. It’s worth taking the diversions from the cycle track to reach Castelrotto, a characteristic South Tyrolean village at the foot of the Alpe di Siusi. If you feel you don’t have the necessary training to tackle this climb, you can avoid the diversions and continue along the cycle path. The second iconic pass is the Cimabanche, which connects Dobbiaco with Cortina d'Ampezzo. Less challenging than the Pinei, this pass offers unmissable views and is the highest point of the cycle track between Munich and Venice.
In addition to crossing these challenging alpine passes, you cycle through Brixen, which was built in the 9th century and is one of the oldest towns in South Tyrol and Cortina d'Ampezzo, the iconic town of the 1956 Winter Olympics and soon to be the host of the 2026 games. The third and fourth stages take place entirely in the heart of the Northern Dolomites and offer breathtaking views of the Tre Cime Nature Park, the Tofane group and Monte Cristallo.
This Collection offers the opportunity to visit and enjoy the serenity and beauty of the Dolomites during the summer, which is the best time to embark on this adventure. If you know this part of Italy in winter, you’ll be amazed at the difference in the landscape during the warmer months. You’ll see, the Dolomites will surprise you!
Pedalling and gazing around, enjoying every view, you’ll surely have an unforgettable experience. Enjoy your ride!
