High above Zirl, the striking Großer Solstein awaits you with its magnificent panorama over the Inn Valley and the Karwendel Mountains. The south-western corner of the Karwendel Nature Park has even more highlights in store for you. On this circular hut-to-hut trek from the small town of Zirl, you explore the wonderful mountain landscape around the Großer Solstein in three days. You will hike a total of 24 kilometres (15 mi) and gain around 2,400 metres (7,900 ft) in elevation.

In addition to the ascent of the Großer Solstein, you climb another panoramic peak: the rugged Erlspitze. From there, your view extends over the Zugspitze to the Lechtal Alps. You can also enjoy the wonderful natural beauty found at lower sections of the circuit. You hike through sparse mountain forests in the picturesque Brunntal valley and discover the narrow Ehnbachklamm gorge, through which a rushing stream flows. If you're lucky, you might even spot ibex in the Solsteine area.

You sleep in two cosy huts, which provide delicious food. Reserve your sleeping place in advance and always pack enough water and food for the road. You can fill up on both at the huts. The circuit is no stranger to technical alpine hiking trails. Surefootedness, sturdy shoes and alpine experience are therefore necessary.

The best time of year for this mini adventure is from mid-June to early October. Make sure to find out whether the huts are open and what the conditions of the trails are like before setting out. Snow can linger on the higher places into the summer. Check the weather forecast carefully before setting off and ask the hut keepers for advice along the way. Suitable rain gear, warm clothing and sun protection should not be missing from any rucksack.

You can easily reach the start point by public transport. Bus line 4176 runs regularly from Innsbruck main station to Zirl.
