The GR 147 trail takes you to the heart of one of the most hidden natural paradises of Jaén: the depths of the Sierra de Segura. This may be one of the most unknown corners of the Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, yet it’s an incredible place.
If you’re looking to explore high mountain areas and walk through enchanting forests, this is the place for you. This adventure takes you along ancient footpaths, little-travelled forest tracks and a few stretches on tarmac roads. Along the way, you pass through the largest and best preserved laricio pine forests in the Iberian Peninsula, hike up to incredible panoramic viewpoints and meander along the course of the Segura River, with its crystal clear waters. The village of Segura de la Sierra, with its Moorish castle towering above, is one of the highlights of this route. But it’s not the only interesting settlement: the small whitewashed villages that are tucked away in the hills are living examples of traditional Andalusian mountain architecture and life.
Don't forget to keep your eyes peeled for the wild animals that inhabit these places. Deer, wild boar, mountain goats, golden eagles, vultures and squirrels are easy to spot. More elusive, the wild cat, the badger and the eagle owl will watch your every step.
This Collection begins in Santiago de la Espada, the most isolated and highest municipality in this region of Jaén, and ends in the town of Siles. I’ve divided the adventure into four different stages that cover a total of almost 70 kilometres (43 mi). Each one ends in places with rural accommodation and places to eat and stock up for the next day's route.
If you have time and want to add an extra day to your adventure, you can also complete the GR 147.1, the only variant of this GR. It takes you from Segura de la Sierra to Benatae, passing through Orcera and very close to the Arab towers of Santa Catalina. In total, it adds almost 13 kilometres (8 mi).
Remember that the milestones are hard to find and sometimes even non-existent in some sections of the GR 147. They may be difficult to see in adverse conditions. Also, take care around the Viga Pass, as there’s a lot of brush and no handrails.
As with all hiking routes, wear good footwear and bring weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, some food and water. The GR 147 trail passes through several towns and recreational areas where you can refill your water and supplies. Although the Sierra de Segura can be visited at any time of year, bear in mind that summers can be very hot, so take plenty of water with you. In autumn, the poplar trees hidden among the pines add warm yellow tints that make the scenery even more incredible.
As for the best way to get to the starting and finishing points, it’s best to use your own car. Santiago de la Espada and Siles are small towns and, as such, public transport is quite limited. However, if you want to find out about available buses, the companies with regular lines in the area are Alsa ( alsa.es ) and Autocares Carcesa ( autocarescarcesa.com/bienvenidos-a-autocares-carcesa )
