The 31-kilometre (19 mi) ViaStockalper leads you in the footsteps of the Swiss politician and entrepreneur Kaspar Stockalper through magnificent natural landscapes. You hike through the wild Gondo Gorge, discover the picturesque Taferna Valley and climb the Simplon Pass with its incredible views. Past beautiful larch forests and flowering alpine meadows, you follow an old mule track that Kaspar Stockalper built over 300 years ago. On the way, you pass historical buildings from Stockalper's and Napoleon's times.

The trail brings the old mule track back to life. As early as the 13th century, the Simplon Pass was used as a passage for goods. In the 17th century, Stockalper extended the path and thus allowed trade to flourish. Later, Napoleon built a passable road over the pass to Gondo.

In three day stages, you hike along the remains of the old mule track and discover the landscape and culture. Information boards give you interesting insights into the history of the Stockalper Trail. There’s also a museum about Simplon pass in the village of the same name, Simplon.

Before you set off, visit the magnificent Stockalper Castle in Brig. The path leads spectacularly along the edge of the Saltina Gorge and down into the idyllic Taferna Valley with the babbling Taferna stream. Once you reach the pass, you have a view of the mighty mountains of the Valais Alps. Pass the 17th century ‘Alte Spittel’ and descend to Simplon Dorf. A final highlight is the wild and picturesque Gondo Gorge. You cross the rushing river several times over metal bridges and the view into the depths of the gorge is fantastic.

The best time of year for the ViaStockalper is from mid-June to the end of September. However, find out in advance what the conditions are like on the trails, because at the high altitudes on the Simplon Pass, snowfields can persist into the summer. You’ll find suggestions for accommodation in the respective stage descriptions. I’d recommend booking your accommodation in advance. Check the weather forecast before you set off and pack suitable clothing and sturdy shoes.

You can easily reach the starting point in Brig by train, from Bern or Zurich for example. From the end point in Gondo, a bus takes you back to Brig. You can find more information about the timetables at sbb.ch/en/timetable.html
