Menorca is the quietest of the Balearic Islands. Its attraction goes far beyond the cliché of pristine coves with turquoise waters. Although it’s a small island, it has cliffs, crop fields, forests, ravines and plains, all of which you can discover along the GR 223. Better known as the Camí de Cavalls, the complete route takes around seven days. While there are several versions of this adventure, here I propose a short five-day variant.
This itinerary follows paths and tracks that seek out the island’s most secret corners. According to locals, some sections already existed in the 15th century; the Catalans used these paths to defend their lands.
As it’s a loop, you can set off any point. However, the official start is at the port of Maó. The entire route is a certified part of the GR 223 and is marked. Along the way, there are more than 100 gates to pass through due to the many livestock farms here. Remember to close them so the animals don’t escape.
A hardtail MTB is best for this adventure. You can also rent a bike on the island if you don’t want to travel to Menorca with your own. Don’t forget to check it has enough bottle holders and bring a small bag to carry a lightweight, warm jacket and snacks.
Spring and autumn are the best seasons for the Camí de Cavalls. Winter is very windy and humid and summer is hot and touristy.
The route is designed for people who are reasonably fit and have average to advanced technical riding skills. Although it’s possible to take alternative routes, some trails require solid handling. Many sections are also not passable without advanced skills so you may have to get off and push (while enjoying the scenery around you at least!).
I’ve divided the stages so that you can find accommodation and places to eat in the towns at the end of each stage. However, the elevations and distances are significant and the terrain is sometimes challenging, so check the route carefully to see if the route division makes sense for you.
To get to Menorca, you can take a plane or a boat. There are direct air connections from many parts of Europe and Spain. You can also catch a boat from Barcelona or Valencia.
If you dare to embark on this two-wheeled adventure, I'm sure that its culture and natural beauty amaze you, while the terrain will challenge your fitness.
