Perched at an altitude of 900 metres (2,953 ft) in Aveyron, not far from the Tarn Valley in the south of France, the Lévézou plateau offers ideal terrain for a cycle ride lasting several days. This Collection will take you on a journey of discovery through this landscape and its architectural heritage, steeped in history and technology. You'll cover around 130 kilometres (81 mi) of road, taking you over hills and valleys and through a landscape shaped as much by nature as by man. I've divided this itinerary into three Tours to suit intermediate cyclists, allowing you to enjoy the activities available around the lakes.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the public authorities were considering a hydroelectric project in Lévézou. But in the aftermath of the Second World War, the Marshall Plan took the project off the drawing board. And so the Pouget hydroelectric scheme was born. The concession for the complex was awarded to EDF from the outset. Five lakes were created, including Pont-de-Salars, Bages, Pareloup and Villefranche-de-Panat, which cover the agricultural plains of this hilly region. Since then, the municipalities on the Lévézou plateau have taken advantage of the presence of the lakes by developing water sports and hiking facilities.

This Collection explores the complex identity of the Lévézou region, between the monumental technical structures of the dams, the rural and agricultural land, and the historical imprint of the power that the Church has exercised over this territory.

Passing the dam at Lac de Pareloup is a particular highlight. On one side, the water stretches for miles in a jagged form that mirrors the plain it has engulfed. On the other, the immensity of the structure that stretches all the way down to the Vioulou, a river tamed by man that once irrigated the vanished plain.

On a different note, passing through Laissac is a testament to the local farming culture. The livestock market held there is the place for livestock farmers from all over the south of France. This tradition has left its mark on the cuisine of Lévézou and the whole of Aveyron, with tripous (tripe) and calf's head at the top of the list of specialities and breakfasts at village festivals.

Most facilities, accommodation options and shops are located around the lakes and open from spring until autumn. The roads can be slippery in winter, with heavy frost and occasional snow. The Four Lakes route passes through several villages that are not very lively in the off-season. But in a number of places, such as Pont-de-Salars, Laissac, Salle-Curan and Villefranche-de-Panat, you'll find a place to eat all year round.

The best way to get to the starting point of the Collection is by car and car parks are free. You can, however, get to Canet-de-Salars by Lio regional bus, route 216, which leaves from Rodez. This service does not run on Sundays, except only once during the summer holidays. What's more, you can take your bike in the hold as long as there's enough room.
