The Sierra de Albarracín, located in the province of Teruel in eastern Spain, has become very popular in the world of bikepacking thanks to the Empty Mountains Route.
However, this is a different route over fewer days that you can adapt according to your needs, free time and fitness. I have divided this 110-kilometre (68 mi) circuit into three stages so that you can savour this paradise. The route explored in this Collection allows you to cross not only the incredible reddish rock formations that rise from the land but also the mysterious rings of Liesegang, the transparent waters of the Guadalquivir, and the rock art paintings of the Pinares de Rodeno, which date to between 6000 and 2000 BC.
This route is designed for a gravel or mountain bike and is self-supported. The daily distances range between 26 and 31 kilometres (16 - 19 mi), with up to 1,200 metres (3,937 ft) of elevation gain. The majority of the route is rideable, except for two sections where you must push your bike along narrow sections of stairs and walkways, which are shared with hikers.
Make sure you travel as light as possible and carry enough water and food for each stage. If you’d like to spend the night indoors, Bezas and Albarracín offer accommodation if you’re prepared to make a detour from the main route. If you want to wild camp, please respect the basic rules.
The circuit starts and ends in Teruel. The city is easily accessible by bus from places like Barcelona, Valencia or Madrid. You can also get there by train, but not all trains accept bicycles in their carriages so check the bicycle policy before buying your ticket. If you decide to arrive in your own vehicle, Teruel has several car parks.
I recommend doing this route in spring, summer or autumn. Try to avoid winter, unless you are looking for a purely winter experience. Bear in mind that this area is at least 1,100 metres (3,610 ft) above sea level and enjoys a Mediterranean mountain climate, so winters are cold, with freezing winds and sub-zero temperatures. Spring and summer, on the other hand, are good times for cycling, not only because of the pleasant temperatures but also because of the hours of sunlight. Despite this, pack the right clothing for each season and check the weather forecast for the days you'll be in the area. I advise you to use a layering system and don't brave the cold that can come at night even in summer.
Whichever season you choose, you won’t regret discovering the incredible landscapes of Albarracín by bikepacking. I'm sure that this Collection will leave you equally happy and amazed.
