The Sierra de Guara mountain range is located within the Sierra y Cañones de Guara natural park. It is the largest protected natural area in Aragon, in the north-east of Spain. Although this area is well known for its canyons and vertical walls for climbing, cycling is slowly gaining popularity. This is not only due to its incredible landscapes and endless tracks, but also because within the park there is also a very special place: the Biello Sobrarbe. This enclave, very popular with visitors from France, belongs to Sobrarbe, in the regions of Somontano and Hoya de Huesca.
These two locations – the Sierra de Guara and the Biello Sobrarbe – make up this route that covers a large part of the natural park. Not only will you discover a territory with a unique and intriguing geography, but also a varied native flora and fauna. You can observe many of the most important bird species in Europe here. You’ll also experience first-hand the depopulation of most of the villages along this route. Because of this, I recommend planning the stages well in advance. Although it is divided into three days, remember that you can adapt the route to your requirements. The aim is to savour this paradise of the Pre-Pyrenees in a relaxed and self-sufficient way.
A mountain bike is the best option for fully enjoying the paths, tracks and mountain roads through which the passes, but you could also use a gravel bike with tyres and gearing suitable for mountain trails. Most of the route is rideable, with a few exceptions that you’ll still be able to tackle with good bike skills. Otherwise, you can always get off and push. Pack as light as possible and carry enough water and food for each stage. Bear in mind that during the summer, water is scarce and the heat can be unbearable during the middle of the day. I’d advise visiting in spring or autumn to experience the area at its best.
If you’re planning to spend the night in any of the refuges proposed during the stages, you should leave everything better or at least the same as you found it.
This is a circular route that begins and ends in the small village of Bárcabo, inside the natural park. I highly recommend visiting the centre of this town to see its Romanesque architecture and the remains of its ancient castle before you set off. Bárcabo can only be reached by car - please park considerately. If you have more days to spare, you can get to Huesca by bus, or take the train from Barcelona or Madrid and cycle to one of the points along the route.
Without a doubt, one of the highlights of the route is the ascent of the north face of the Tozal de Guara, not only because of the toughness of the ascent to 2,077 metres (6,800 ft), but also because of the panoramic views and beautiful trails you’ll discover here.
Take appropriate clothing for each season and check the weather forecast regularly. I’d advise using a layering system for the greatest versatility and don't always rely on good weather. Whatever time of year you choose to visit, this area will steal your heart and make you want to come back. Enjoy this spectacular circular Tour around Guara and Biello Sobrarbe.
