The Via Transilvanica (Transylvanian Trail) hiking route opened in 2022 after years of hard work. The unique route crosses the Romanian mountains from north to south, through wild and unspoilt regions. Covering more than 1,400 kilometres (870 mi), the route reveals breathtaking nature and more than 2,000 years of Transylvanian history.
The Romanian NGO Tășuleasa – which specialises in environmental, educational, social and cultural issues – is responsible for this mammoth project. The entire route is divided into seven sections and 67 stages which you can complete on foot, by mountain bike or even on horseback. The Via Transilvanica is synonymous with diversity. From the peaks of the high mountains to the banks of the Danube, the landscapes are as varied as the people.
This Collection is the first section of this long adventure. It crosses the Bucovina region over 131 kilometres (81 mi) divided into six stages. You’ll walk from the borders of Ukraine to the beginning of the Romanian highlands. This region is home to some architectural gems listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The mediaeval monasteries dating from the 15th and 16th centuries will dazzle you with their colourful and extremely well-preserved paintings. Bukovina is also famous for its painted Easter eggs. The abundance of ornaments and the meticulousness of the designs is remarkable. On your hike, you can visit a museum where over 11,000 of these eggs are on display.
The terrain is challenging in places and requires concentration. But you should also pay attention to your environment as Romania has the largest brown bear population in the whole of Europe. The chance of encountering bears is low but you should be aware of how to behave around them. In most cases, the bear will be just as frightened as you are and will quickly flee to safety. Bear attacks are very rare; they only attack when they feel in danger. Encounters with the numerous shepherd dogs can be more of a nuisance. However, if you don’t behave aggressively and don’t show any hostility, the dogs will ignore you. A shepherd dog protects its herd, so it’s best to wander as far away from the pastures as possible.
Only a few people speak English in the mountainous regions and it can be a challenge to communicate. It’s certainly helpful if you memorise a few words and phrases in Romanian. However, you don't need to worry about accommodation and catering. You'll find shops, guesthouses, hotels and sometimes even campsites at each stage. Prices range between €9 and €14 for accommodation and between €4 and €9 for a meal. This adventure is aimed at people who hike regularly and have a reasonable level of fitness.
Make sure you are well equipped. The paths can sometimes be very muddy and rocky. Good walking shoes are essential. The climate can be very harsh and changeable, even in summer. Warm, waterproof clothing is required in all seasons. Avoid winter, as there’s a lot of snow. The best time to visit is between May and October. If possible, don't set off on these trails alone. If you are on your own, a dog on a lead may be an excellent idea.
Romania plans to join the Eurozone in 2024 at the earliest. The local currency, the Leu, is approximately equivalent to 20 euro cents. The best way to get to Putna is by train. At the end of the stage at Poiana Negrii, it's best to catch the bus.
All that remains is for me to wish you ‘Drum Bun’ (farewell in Romanian). Have a good trip!
