In the depths of the Atlantic, very close to the African continent, lies an island that was forged millions of years ago. The legacy of its geological activity is a land of steep mountains, deep ravines, dizzying cliffs and serene valleys. This island is one of the wonderful Canary Islands, La Gomera.

In this Collection, which follows the Cumbres de La Gomera Natural Trail (GR 131), I invite you to discover natural wonders hidden in this small corner of the archipelago. Over 44 kilometres (89 mi), you can explore mystical laurel forests, beautiful valleys nestled between large rock faces, cliffs sculpted by wind and water, enormous monoliths and peaks with perfect panoramic views. You’ll also visit the highest point of the Garajonay National Park and the Los Roques natural monument, among others.

The GR 131 is a long-distance trail that aims to unite all the Canary Islands. It’s an extension of the E7 European trail, which runs from Portugal to Hungary via numerous countries. Although the project is not yet complete, you can already hike the central-northern part of La Gomera.

This two-day journey begins in San Sebastián de La Gomera and ends at Vallehermoso beach. The starting point is accessible by bus from various points on the island, although you can also arrive by car. Vallehermoso beach, however, doesn’t have public transport connections, so you have two options: walk back to the town of Vallehermoso or book a taxi in advance to pick you up. In Vallehermoso, you can catch a bus back to San Sebastián de La Gomera. Check the bus lines and schedule here (in Spanish): guaguagomera.com/publico/contenido/lineas. You can only reach the island by ferry from Tenerife and La Palma. The fastest leaves from the port of Los Cristianos and takes 50 minutes.

The first stage, which is quite physically demanding, ends in Chipude. This town is the only one which offers accommodation and the opportunity to resupply. Although the second day officially ends at Vallehermoso beach, it first passes through its namesake town where you could also stay to extend your trip.

Although the route doesn’t require special technical skills, you’ll need a good level of fitness to manage the distances and uneven terrain. I recommend carrying plenty of water every day and buying supplies as you pass through the different towns.

The Canary Islands enjoy a temperate climate year-round, so this route is great in every season. However, temperatures in summer are higher and there’s usually a greater influx of tourists. Therefore, it’s better to opt for spring, autumn and even winter. Whichever season you choose, check the weather forecast before you start.
Always carry sunscreen, a raincoat and thermal layers. Trekking poles can help your knees on the most demanding sections.

What are you waiting for to discover this incredible island? You’ll soon discover that there aren’t enough words to describe La Gomera.
