Brighton and Bristol are two of the most vibrant and dynamic cities in the south of England, known for their flourishing arts and music scenes, inclusive communities and commitment towards the environment.
In the early medieval period, Bristol was a major port city with strong trade links to Europe, while Brighton was a small fishing village with little significance. Fortunes began to shift in the 18th and 19th centuries when King George IV transformed Brighton into a fashionable seaside resort. Meanwhile, Bristol's maritime trade continued to thrive and the city became an important centre for shipbuilding and manufacturing.
Thanks to the ridges of the South Downs, ancient roman tracks, historic waterways and former railway lines, you can cycle the journey between Brighton and Bristol largely without encountering any traffic. Three-quarters of the route is off-road and traverses through some of the finest and historic countryside in Southern England.
You’ll pass some key cultural, historic and natural landmarks including Devil’s Dyke, Old Sarum Castle, Stonehenge, Pulteney Bridge and Caen Hill locks. Although the route often feels remote, it takes you through the heart of two cities; Winchester and Bath. You’ll also find a number of pubs and cafes along the way, which I’ve detailed in the Tour descriptions.
It’s a challenging and varied route, with steep climbs, fast descents and a long, well-earned flat section on the last day. I’d advise using a gravel or mountain bike, but a sturdy touring bike is an option if you’re an experienced off-road cyclist.
I’ve split the journey into four stages, which end at camp sites that are open for most of the year, and are on (or close to) the route. Starting in Brighton means you’ll complete the most challenging sections first and benefit from west-facing views that are often accompanied by beautiful sunsets. However, if you choose to start in Bristol, you may be more likely to enjoy a westerly tailwind from Salisbury onwards, where you’re often exposed to high winds on the open ridges.
Brighton and Bristol are both served by frequent trains from London and Portsmouth. Until recently there was a direct service that ran once a day between both cities, but this was withdrawn in 2022. The best way to get back to Brighton from Bristol (or vice versa) is with a change at Portsmouth and Southsea station. It’s much cheaper than the faster service, which goes via London terminals and saves you having to cycle across the capital.
I test rode this route over four wet days in March on a heavily loaded touring bike. The ground was very wet, boggy and slippery in places so I would avoid the trip after heavy rainfall. It was a challenge, but achievable in four days with low average speeds. If you enjoy history, dramatic views and are thirsty for an off-road adventure; this one's for you!
