Green hills, deep forests, picturesque valleys and breathtaking panoramas await on this Tour between Karlsruhe and Constance. These two popular cities in the state of Baden-Württemberg, in southwest Germany, are bursting with impressive architecture and beautiful parks.
You’ll cross the Black Forest, take in views of the Swabian Alb and enter the beautiful Hochrhein-Bodensee region over 233 kilometres (145 mi). You can also look forward to a few challenges as each of the four stages has significant elevation gain to contend with. Your effort is rewarded with picturesque views as far as the Alps.
Karlsruhe Central Station is the starting point. But you won't be heading straight south from there, because you can't miss out on a visit to the magnificent Karlsruhe Palace and its extensive park. Initially flat, the route takes you into the marvellous Murg Valley, one of the deepest in the Black Forest. Follow the river for 48 kilometres (30 mi) on the Murg Valley Cycle Path to the village of Baiersbronn. In Freudenstadt, you can marvel at Germany's largest market square before reaching one of the two highest points above 800 metres (2,600 ft) on the Kienberg.
You’ll then cycle through a hilly landscape with forests and fields, crossing the Neckar and Danube valleys. After Tuttlingen, you can enjoy a fabulous view from the 862-metre (2,828 ft) Witthoh. The route descends through beautiful valleys and over gentle hills, some with vineyards, to the plain by Lake Constance – the grand finale of the Tour – where a fresh breeze awaits. You can then start your return journey at the railway station, which is located directly on the shores of the lake.
On this Tour, you’ll mainly be travelling on cycle paths, quiet side roads and gravel tracks. There’s plenty of climbing, so you’ll need a good fitness level. You’ll find a good choice of accommodation in the stage destinations of Forbach, Lossburg and Tuttlingen. You can easily divide the entire route into more or fewer stages, as there’s plenty of accommodation along the way as well as connections to the railway network.
Look forward to scenic delights and lively towns on this Tour across Baden-Württemberg.
