Green forests, gentle peaks, bubbling streams, and winding valleys – the Taunus Nature Park is made for hiking. The second largest National Park in Hessen is known for its unique landscapes, historical treasures and large network of trails. Located on Frankfurt am Main's doorstep, the park is waiting to be explored.
Travel back to the time of the Romans and Celts, smell medieval castle air and enjoy the magnificent views of the Rhine-Main plain and Frankfurt skyline. The Tanus is very diverse: you will roam through dense forests, descend into deep caves and climb rugged cliffs. In this Collection, I will introduce you to seven different day trips that will take you to the most beautiful corners of the nature park.
Each route is unique and will surprise you with beautiful landscapes, impressive castles or interesting museums. At the end of the hikes, you can relax in a restaurant and enjoy the regional, hearty cuisine. We recommend trying „Handkäs“, green sauce with eggs or ribs with cabbage – preferably with a glass of apple cider.
You can do these hikes all year long, whether on a blooming spring day, in the summer sun, on a romantic autumn day or in snowy winter. On clear days, the viewpoints offer spectacular views over the region. However, bear in mind that some attractions such as the Kubacher Kristallhöhle are closed during the winter months.
The Taunus Nature Park begins 19 miles (about 30 kilometers) northeast of Frankfurt. The Main metropolis is, therefore, a great starting point for the routes. You can easily reach the starting points and return back to Frankfurt from Frankfurt train station with the regional train and S-Bahn. Information about tickets and connections is available at the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund. In Frankfurt, you will find a wide selection of accommodation to suit every budget. In the evening, the city also offers many culinary delights and entertainment options.
To get to know the region, it is worth visiting the Taunus Information Center in Hohemark, the so-called Gateway to the Taunus. Here, you can get helpful tips and learn interesting facts about the nature park and its flora and fauna in the free exhibition. For more information, visit naturpark-taunus.de.
Finally, a tip to help you quickly adapt to Hessian culture: you can’t go wrong with the greeting „Ei Gude!“ at any time of day.
